The Thing No-one Likes to Talk About

Let’s talk about money. Moola. Cash.
It’s the subject that no-one likes talking about because…well I’m not too sure why. People who work need to be paid, otherwise how does anyone make a living?
After having started a business it’s particularly stressful because people need to be paid for their work, on time and fairly. Creating a product isn’t cheap either - I’ve really come to resonate with that very famous saying in entertainment: “time is money”. Renting a space costs a daily rate - if you can lessen the days you rent, you pay less money. People will be paid a weekly, hourly or monthly salary so if you can lessen that time they’re required then it costs less money. And so it goes on. It’s an endless juggle of what can I cut to cut costs and what’s necessary to make this product something that other people (like your audience) will pay for. On that note - I want the product to be true to who I am and what I believe in. The stories that are to be told are ones that I think are sincere and not just a money grab.
It’s interesting because I always hear that people will work for something they believe in, and yes, I understand that people will do some work pro bono if it is an idea that they are really passionate about and want to be a part of creating, however, that’s not a sustainable business model. If you really want to make a career out of something, you need to be paid because everything in this world costs money. I’m not talking about luxuries either, I’m talking about groceries and bills that need to be paid and medical care - it all costs money.
I want to create a business and a future in which artists are paid for their work while new and honest work is being generated. Work that moves, inspires and affects its audiences. To do that, a lot of people need to be involved and those people need to be able to live off what they are paid.
A business model that is generating creative work is never a solo venture. You might hear that people say “this film was made by this person” but in actuality it was the efforts of a lot more than just that one person. Sure, that person could’ve been the driver, the instigator, the creator but that product would not exist without the many hands that helped it get there. I believe that any business that runs successfully is because a group of people are happily doing their job well.
I hope that Haus Mirage can be an environment for creatives to break into the industry, get given the chance to create something truly special and original, and be paid for it fairly.
Stay tuned for our next big adventure - maybe you’ll get to be part of making it a reality.
Here at Haus Mirage,
